Hindsight Sammy/Sammy

Hope everyone is enjoying the weekend.

Here in the New York area, we got an unexpected gift today. Yeah, walking around the streets of NYC on 2 December in nearly 60 degrees Fahrenheit definitely qualifies as a treat!

In other news, and to celebrate Day 20 of our countdown, I’d like to introduce you to my daughter.

Not that she had a lot of choice in the matter, but the girl who was born Samantha K. Fischer 20 years ago, has more nicknames than the average person. (No, check that; she’s got way more.)

Let’s see…

We’ve got: Sam, Sammy, Sammi (her idea, deciding at age eight that she wanted to spell her name ending in “i”), Sam-Sam,
Sam “The Bam,” Sam “The Slam,” Sammy K., ‘Noon, ‘Schneebs, Teems, Deem, and the list just goes on and on.

Yeah, that kid is an etymologist’s dream gone haywire!

I know we sometimes throw around cliches all too freely around here, but the weird thing about cliches, more often than not, is that they are really just simple reflections of the truth. Sure, you know plenty of them:

  1. “Twenty years went by in a blink.”
  2. “I took my daughter to a movie when she was six years old, and when it came on TV years later, I suddenly burst into tears.”
  3. “One night I was singing my little girl to sleep, and the next thing I knew I was driving her to college.”

I mean think about it. Just look at those pictures. How in the name of anything resembling logic could twenty years have passed already? How did that smiling little kid on the left morph into that fabulous grown-up girl on the right?? (Jesus, when I figure that one out, we’ll really have something to talk about, huh?!)

Finally, and speaking of another cliche, I think it’s fair to put “Hindsight is 20/20.” somewhere on that list. If we can loosely define it as looking back on things in the past, only to see them more clearly later on, then I’ll buy that as a truth.

And as for you, Sammy K., that smile is the only truth your old dad will ever need.

Wishing all of you a good night, a great second half of the weekend and the shared joy of knowing that when the clock strikes midnight, we will have reached Countdown Day 19.
