Evening, friends.
Hope the weekend is going well.
And…congratulations to us all for making it to the one-week mark!
As for today, Day 7, why don’t we stick with music? (And yes, I have to admit that I was way psyched when so many of you seemed to enjoy the journey back to the days of 8-track players and tapes!)
In keeping with the throwback mode, let’s look at some hit songs and their respective covers. Yeah, those songs that were so popular on the first g0-round that other recording artists looked to recreate/put their own spin on things. (Oh, man…unintentional, but bad, pun on “spin!) And there are no hard and fast rules that the original is necessarily the best. Your personal take on it is what’s most important.
Let’s try these seven, and we’ll list the original side by side with the cover. (Some songs – many, in fact – have been covered multiple times, but we’ll stick with these pairings for now.)
1. “Always Something There to Remind Me” (Dione Warwick, 1963/Naked Eyes, 1983)
2. “Everlasting Love” (Robert Knight, 1967/Carl Carlton, 1974)
3. “Blinded by the Light” (Bruce Springsteen, 1973/Manferd Mann’s Earth Band, 1976)
4. “Willie and the Hand Jive” (Johnny Otis, 1958/Levon Helm, 1982)
5. “Dancing in the Street” (Martha and the Vandellas, 1965/David Bowie and Mick Jagger, 1985)
6. “Tainted Love” (Gloria Jones, 1964/Soft Cell, 1981)
7. “Reach Out I’ll Be There” (The Four Tops, 1964/Gloria Gaynor, 1975 )
Up to you guys, of course, but let’s consider putting these to a vote.
And no sweat if you don’t happen to know any/some of the songs. (Same deal if you only know the original or only the cover version.)
And as above, if you want to put your preferred versions in the comments section on either Facebook or Linkedin, I’ll look forward to reading them. (If it’s easier to email them, though, please send to me at: JLJFish56@gmail.com.)
There’s so many great originals and covers out there of so many different songs, please feel free to share those, too!
Looking forward to reading your selections!
Until tomorrow,
JFish
