Seventeen 17s

Evening, all.

Welcome back to our adventure!

As the half-way point in our countdown is now clearly in site, let’s make a quick stop at Day 17 and see what we can find.

I checked it out, and between music, movies, sports and a ton of other random stuff, there’s a lot of things out there I never even thought about.

Think I found some pretty OK stuff, though.

So, without further adieu, may I present, and in no particular order, our homage to 17:

  1. *”Please Mr. Please” (Olivia Newton John, 1975, *lyrics include mention of a juke box song – B-17 – in memory of a lost love.)
  2. “Sexy and Seventeen” (Stray Cats, 1983)
  3.  “At Seventeen” (Janis Ian, 1975)
  4. *”Edge of Seventeen” (Stevie Nicks, 1981, *lyrics in the chorus include the confusion and heartbreak sometimes associated with that age.)
  5. The Edge of Seventeen (STX Entertainment, 2016 film)
  6. Alexis Sanchez, Chilean soccer player who wore 17 as a member of The Arsenal Football Club (“soccer” to us in the U.S.) of The Premier League.
  7.  Prime time all the time (Yep, 17 is a prime number, number six on the overall list if you include the number one.)
  8. “Least random number” (There’s a term in hacker culture where 17 bears that distinction because of its unique properties. In a study at MIT, where people were asked to choose a number between 1 and 20, 17 was consistently the most common choice.)
  9.  Adrian Beltré (The Hall of Fame baseball player, inducted 2024, ranks 17th on the all-time hit list with 3,166 hits.)
  10.  Keith Hernandez (The Fan favorite/World Series hero/TV personality and broadcaster wore the #17 for the New York Mets from 1983-1989. He was elected to the Mets Hall of Fame in 1997, and his number was retired by the NY Mets in 2022. It’s widely known that fans of the orange and blue hold out hope that he’ll one day get to the MLB Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY.)
  11. *“I Love Rock and Roll” (Joan Jett, 1981, *the lyrics mention a young guy of age 17 or so who holds the singer’s interest.)
  12. 17 Again (New Line Cinema, 2009 film)
  13. 1917 (Dreamworks Pictures, 2019 film)
  14. Unlucky 17? (In Japanese culture, according to superstition, 17 is listed among the unluckiest numbers, along with 12, 13 and 666.)
  15. Hondo 17 (For NBA great John J. Havlicek, AKA “Hondo,” 1940-2019 who wore #17 throughout his 16-year career with the Boston Celtics.)
  16. Bobby D. (Oscar-winning actor Robert De Niro was born on August 17, 1943 in Manhattan, New York.)
  17. The Siege of Savannah (Recognized as one of the bloodiest battles of the American Revolution, U.S. and French forces spent nearly a month, September 23 – October 18, 1779, trying to retake the Georgia fort from the British. The fort remained in British hands, though, until July 1782.)

Take a bow, 17. We salute you!
See you tomorrow, all.
