Evening, friends.
Welcome to Day 13 and our chance to change fortunes.
As we all know, 13 is almost alway associated with negativity. So, as we often do when we get the chance to hang out together, let’s turn convention on its ear.
Here are 13 different instances and contexts where the number 13 is considered lucky or holds positive significance.
1.) Viva Italia: In Italy, 13 is a lucky number associated with abundance and good fortune. (The expression “fare tredici” means to hit the jackpot.)
2.) Made in the U.S.A: The U.S. flag has 13 stripes representing the original 13 colonies, a foundational number for the nation.
3.) Red Raiders rule: Colgate University, home of the Red Raiders of the Patriot League, was originally founded by 13 men with 13 dollars, 13 prayers, and 13 articles, leading the community to consider 13 a good omen!
4.) Shake it off: Mega-star singer Taylor Swift considers 13 her lucky number, noting she was born on the 13th and frequently won awards while seated in the 13th row or seat.
5.) Bella Luna: Ancient cultures believed that the 13 lunar cycles in a year were in line with divine feminimiity, fertility and the cosmos.
6.) Emunah/faith: The number 13 has holy significance, including 13 principles of Jewish faith, and marks the important coming-of-age ceremony of the Bar Mitzvah at age 13.
7.) Baker’s dozen: This term refers to 13 items (typically baked goods), where the extra item was historically a “vantage loaf,” considered very lucky for the customer.
8.) Meanwhile, back at the Pyramids: In ancient Egypt, the number 13 was associated with transformation, rebirth and prosperity.
9.) Shou bi nan shan: In Chinese tradition, the number 13 is considered lucky, linked to “assured growth” or a “decidedly vibrant” life.
10.) Celebrate life: On the 13th day of each month, Trayodashi (the Sanskrit word for the 13th lunar day in a two-week time frame) is celebrated. Actions on this day are believed to yield positive results and foster good karma.
11.) You complete me: Ancient Greeks viewed 13 as a complete, divine, and incorruptible prime number. And for good measure, it seems that Zeus was considered the thirteenth and most-powerful god.
12.) Osda: In some Native American cultures, the number 13 is a sign of good luck and protection, associated with the Great Spirit.
13.) Bon chance: Prior to WWI, the number 13 was traditionally considered a lucky number in France and used as a good luck symbol on charms and postcards.
Keep up the positive humors, everyone.
