Hey, everybody.
Hope the weekend is treating you all well.
Yeah, I know we’re not quite there yet, but for what it’s worth, I’m feeling pretty good about being halfway home.
So, for today, let’s talk midpoints and halves.
Now when I think of those two things , I’m usually thinking about geography and time. And maybe some geology thrown in, something I can dig out of the subconscious from an old earth science class or something. And then there’s always music, something of a go-to for me.
For countdown purposes, here are 15 notable halves and halfways and midpoints for you guys to chew on.
GEOGRAPHICAL
1. The Equator: Divides the Northern and Southern Hemispheres.
2. The Prime Meridian: Divides the Eastern and Western Hemispheres.
3. Geographic Center of the Contiguous U.S.: Near Lebanon, Kansas.
4. Center of the World (Felicity, California): There’s a monument marking Middle-earth in the center of Felicity, CA.
5. The Tropic(s) of Cancer and Capricorn: Key lines of latitude marking seasonal extremes.
TIME AND SPACE
6. Midnight: The midpoint of the day/night cycle.
7. The Midpoint of a Decade: E.g., 2005 for the 2000s.
8. Midsummer’s Eve (Litha): Celebrates the longest day, the summer solstice.
9. The Halfway Point (e.g., Route 66): A milestone in long journeys.
10. Apogee/Perigee: The farthest/closest points of the Moon’s orbit to Earth.
11. Half-life: The time it takes for a substance to decay to half of its initial amount through the process of radioactive decay.
MUSIC
12. “Half the Way”: Song by Brenda Lee, 1961)
13. “Half As Much”: Song by Ray Charles, 1962)
14. “Ninety-Nine and a Half”: Song by Wilson Pickett, 1966
15. “Half Moon”: Song by Janis Joplin, 1970)
Congratulations to us all for getting to the top of the hill. Now we just need to make our way back down.
Typically corny of me, certainly, but nonetheless, let’s do this together.
See you on the other side, gang.
